Manchester Pest Control have seen a lively start this year which is very surprising given the relatively cold winter of last year.
Manchester Pest Control Pest controllers were kept occupied with the usual city centre rat infestations throughout the winter of 2009/10, but the relatively cold late winter has already brought some ant infestation reported.
The damp summers of 2009 and 2010 were not to the liking of the hymenoptera (sawflies, wasps, ants & bees) but 2010 looks like it will turn out to be a hectic year for flying ant problems.
Regularly ants build their nests under the floors of houses and inside cavity walls causing a large number of foraging ants to invade kitchens and food cupboards.
However it is at mating time when they can be most distressing as they release winged males and winged queens which then mate on the wing.
The appearance of several thousands of these winged ants inside houses can be horrible indeed.
A somewhat new pest was quite numerous in the Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire area last season, the Varied Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci).
It was unusual for pest controllers in Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester to encounter these pests until lately but they seemed to appear from nowhere in 2008 and already this spring has seen reports of varied carpet beetle in large numbers.
They have a similar life cycle to moths their larvae, known as woolly bears can eat natural fibres and can do great damage to carpets and natural fabrics. They are a difficult and tricky pest to remove.
Manchester Pest Control report that bed bugs are carrying on their resurgence in the Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester area, often arriving as hitch-hikers in the suitcases of home-coming holiday makers.
Very often the first reaction of those unfortunates who realise that they are infested with these revolting,blood-sucking insects is to burn the old beds and get.
This is an expensive error as despite their name bed bugs not only hide in beds and in an infested room will be found anywhere within up to fifteen feet of the bed, in cupboards, drawers etc, even in electrical sockets and the new beds are quickly re-infested.
A lot of people confuse bed bugs with dust mites which are not visible to the naked eye.
They dine only on blood which they syphon from their sleeping hosts. People usually associate bed bugs with dirty conditions but nothing could be further from the truth, they do not need dirt, they eat you!
