Planning to Build a Chick Coop

May 29, 2009 by Answer Provider

When planning to grow chicks to finally become mature chickens, you should have a chick coop for the chicks. If you want to learn how to build a chick coop yourself, there are a number of considerations you should bear in mind and a few things you must ask yourself before you initiate the project.

Firstly, if planning for the purpose of the chick coop, are you going to use it again? If you are preparing your adult chickens to harvest eggs that will be consumed later, thus not planning on breeding more chicks, then your first chick coop must be made small and must not be a lasting permanent structure type. You will only construct a more permanent structure for your chickens if these are mature already to lay eggs. But if you are going to be fertilizing some of the eggs with a rooster, then your chick coop can be a permanent dwelling where you will transfer the baby chicks.

The other consideration on how to build a chick coop is the placement of the coop on your place. Your chick coop should be closer to your household and should have an area for brooding or incubation. The chick coop should be maintained warm enough and dry. Moreover, it must also provide natural sunlight to sustain the chicks in good shape. The chicks should be kept indoors until they have developed full feather, eliminating the down feathers. This will ordinarily happen at around six to eight weeks old. At this time, they will require a tiny run area where you can place their water and feed if they are outdoors.

Eventually, when studying how to build a chick coop, make sure

you construct it in a way where clean up is very convenient. You demand to continually maintain your chick coop real clean as your baby’s nursery. Your incubation or brooding place must perpetually be pristine by ensuring some sort of way to plunge the moisture and feces which are left over by the chicks.
